EL HOYO

Spain

Synopsis

A vertical prison with one cell per level. Two people per cell. Only one food platform and two minutes per day to feed from up to down. An endless nightmare trapped in The Hole.

Director's Statement

THE PLATFORM is a metaphor which forces us to confront the limits of our individual and collective responsibility. When we judge reality from our own particular level and observe it from the standpoint of our own needs, longings and fantasies, it can be difficult to appreciate that there are probably as many levels, rights and responsibilities as there are individuals. For a long time, I blamed the powers-that-be for all the world's ills ... And I do still believe that certain individuals, slaves to their own immense greed, bear a great responsibility; nonetheless, when I look into the pit, I see far more levels below me than above. I am terrified by the prospect of losing my own position. And I ask myself whether in defending what I consider to be rightfully mine and in striving to prosper, I may not perhaps bear some responsibility for the structural perpetuation of injustice. Not me, surely… All I want to do is climb a few levels more! Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia
