Synopsis

Toto, a young boy, is fascinated by the cinema and even more so by the projection room and the man who rules over it, Alfredo. Toto soon knows every hand movement and every trick in the book, as well as the strict censorship code — no kissing scenes in the movies in their Sicilian village.
Alfredo loses his sight in a fire and Toto takes over his job. But years later, as a grown man, he leaves his village. Time passes and the past catches up with the present: Alfredo has died and Toto's tender love for the long-gone »Cinema Paradiso« and for his lost friend, compel him, now a successful director, to return to Sicily.
