read more about the film

After 15 years, Diana finds the letters her father used to send her. Will what she is going to read now mend her relationship with her dad? Will she forgive him for leaving their family? This story brings back childhood memories: carefree holidays and fun at the funfair to the rhythm of disco music, but also sadness and suffering. The author uses a collage of old letters, archival films and photographs as well as children’s drawings and cut-outs to re-create the past. Apart from the story of a Czech-Vietnamese family, this documentary animation touches upon the problem of socio-cultural differences.

LOVE, DAD was chosen by the festival’s international jury with the following members: Juliusz Machulski (chairman – filmmaker, Poland), Anita Reher (festival director Nordisk Panorama, Denmark), Andrea Martignoni (film animation historian, Italy), Olga Lucovnicova (filmmaker, Moldova) and Amer Al Murry (festival director Al Ain Film Festival, United Arab Emirates).

The short film programme is organised by the European Film Academy  in co-operation with a series of film festivals throughout Europe. At each of these festivals, an independent jury presents one of the European short films in competition with a candidacy in the short film category of the European Film Awards.

This is the 18th short film candidate for 2022. After the annual cycle is completed, the participating festivals will nominate five short films from this list. Afterwards, the more than 4,300 members of the European Film Academy – film professionals from all over Europe – will vote for the overall winner that will be presented at the 35th European Film Awards Ceremony.
