North Macedonia

Synopsis

EDNA is animation which was inspired by the refugee crisis, where Macedonia played the unfortunate role of a transit country; in essence it is a love story set in a very unusual circumstances, told in a very abstract and poetic way.

Director's Biography

Vuk Mitevski was born is Skopje, Macedonia. In 2005, he graduated from Bennington College, USA, specialising in sculpture, painting and set design. He lived in New York where he had a solo exhibition of his monumental paintings SAINTS at the Gallery MC in 2006. He returned to Macedonia to work as set designer on the feature films of his sister Teona S. Mitevska, HOW I KILLED A SAINT, I AM FROM TITOV VELES and THE WOMAN WHO BRUSHED OFF HER TEARS. His participation at the Biennale of the Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean in 2005 was awarded by the Museum of Contemporary Art in Naples and one of his works is included in their collection. In 2009, he had his solo exhibition at the Macedonian National Gallery, supported by the Ministry of Culture of North Macedonia. The exhibition was received as one of the best exhibitions for 2009 and he was picked by the Macedonian press as one of the most exciting emerging young visual artists. His last project LIGHT was shown at “Nord art 2010” in Carlshuette, Germany, the biggest art exhibition in Northern Europe.

Interview

How long did it take to make your short?
Two years

Was it difficult to get financing?
It's always difficult to find financing.
My last film had a successful run, so this project found its own way. This film is a Macedonian-Belgian co-production.

Which thoughts come to mind concerning a “European cinema community”?
They should focus more on art cinema.

If you owned a theatre for one night, which films would you screen?
